It
seems that Senegal has always played a major
part in Black Africa's cultural life.
During the XIXth century, men such as El Hadj
Omar Tali, Cheikh
Amadou Bamba, El Hadj Malick Sy were involved
in the integration of Senegal in the cultural
moslem world.
Later, Léopold
Sédar Senghor and Cheikh
Anta Diop endeavoured to contribute to
the evolution of Pan Africanism and at the
same time restore the Negro-African culture.
The first World Festival of Negro Arts, which
was organized in Dakar in 1966 was one of
the greatest events in Senegal's cultural
life. |
