Islam is regularly gaining
ground all over Western Africa and has become
the religion of more than 95 % of the
Senegalese population.
The islamization of the present territory
of Senegal began during the XIth century when
the Almoravides arrived (the Almoravides were
a moslem sect and dynasty that reigned on
the Nort West of Africa and part of Spain
during the XIth and XIIth centuries).
That islamization continued round the end
of the XIXth century with the arrival of great
moslem brotherhoods
: the Mourides and the Tidjanes.
The Mourides autonomous school was founded
by Ahmadou
Bamba, marabout. This brotherhood
had a congregation of 400,000 talibes (faithful)
when Ahmadou
Bamba died in 1927.
The word "mouride" means
"who is longing for" in Arabic.
Ahmadou Bamba
was buried in Touba. The town has now become
a major place of pilgrimage.
The Tidjane brotherhood
was founded at the beginning of the XXth century
by El Hadj Malik Sy.
This brotherhood's sensibility (i.e.: their
attitude to perceive moral, emotional impressions)
has gathered the largest congregation in Senegal..
The "gamou" is the annual
pilgrimage which commemorates El Hadj Malik
Sy's birth. It takes place at Tivouane. |
