INSTITUTIONS
"ONE PEOPLE, ONE GOAL, ONE FAITH"

Senegal became a republic on November 15th, 1958 and was granted independence on August 20th, 1960. The March 7th 1963 constitution was altered on February 22nd, 1970 and on September 21st, 1991 as well as in 1992.

In 1993 it was decided that the President of the Republic, elected by direct universal suffrage for a 7-year term and re-eligible once, would be in charge of the executive power and determine the policy of the nation. He appoints the Prime Minister, head of the government.

The regime changed from a parliamentary system (1962) to a presidential one with the appointment of a Prime Minister (1970), post which was to be suppressed in 1983 and then restored in 1991.
