Father David
Boilat who was born in Saint-Louis
in 1814 had a French father and a Senegalese
mother (a "Signare").
He was one of the first to be sent to France
in order to study.
There, he became a Roman Catholic priest
in 1841. He went back to Senegal in 1843
and opened a high school in Saint-Louis.
While in Senegal he got interested in local
history and civilizations. He spoke wolof
and sereer and can be considered as the
first french-speaking writer in Senegal.
He published his book "Esquisses
Sénégalaises" in
1853, including the drawings he personally
made. |
